Indian Sarees Online: A Guide to Different Styles and Occasions

The Versatility of Sarees

Sarees are a timeless and traditional garment that have been a part of Indian culture for centuries. Today, sarees come in many different styles and designs, from minimalistic to extravagant, making them suitable for any occasion.

Sarees for Different Occasions

Indian women wear sarees for various occasions like business meetings, pujas, festivals, weddings, and social events. Each occasion calls for a different type of saree. Here are some special and unique saree styles as per Indian women's taste and needs.

Festive Wear Sarees

For festivals and small intimate gatherings, a moderately heavy saree in silk, georgette, with light borders and minimal embroidery is perfect. Dark shades like magenta, maroon, olive green, red, and deep blue are popular choices. Handloom, thread work, and resham work sarees are also popular beauty picks.

Simple Sarees

Breathable fabrics like cotton, chiffon, and crepe are comfortable to wear for daily wear sarees. Light colors like sky blue, mint green, and lemon yellow are easy to carry.

Silk Sarees

Silk sarees with heavy golden borders, floral motifs, animal prints, and paisleys are classic and evergreen. Beige, golden, green, red, mauve, rust, and aqua blue silk sarees in georgette, handloom, tussar, brocade, and banarasi steal the show at festivals and weddings.

Party Wear Sarees

For a bold and glamorous statement, opt for designer, silk, net, lace, and ruffle saree options if you're a bride-to-be or a bridesmaid. Millennial young ladies can opt for pre-pleated sarees, sarees with cap sleeve blouses, sarees with balloon sleeves blouses, ready-to-wear sarees, or sarees with a belt to create a fusion look for their cocktail and office parties.

Wedding Wear Sarees

Elaborate borders, shining heavy banarasi and silk fabric, royal zari embroidery, rich cut-dana and mirror work, and such heavy royal work creations are great options for attending a wedding or even building your own bridal trousseau.

Printed Sarees

Printed sarees in georgette, crepe, and cotton suit every body type. Geometric prints, leheriya prints, polka dots, leaves, flowers, birds, and paisleys enhance your personality.

Embroidered Sarees

Embroidery of any kind plays a pivotal role in creating a captivating and astounding look for a saree. Hand-embroidery, chikankari, resham, zari, thread, and 3D floral embroidery on sarees create a graceful impact and make the saree look subtle and timeless. Embroidery sarees reflect the rich heritage of Indian craft and look great for evening gatherings, festivals, and parties.

Chiffon Sarees

Thin border sarees and small print sarees in chiffon look fresh and attractive as regular and party wear saree options. Chiffon saree in monotone or multi-shade is also a charming style for daily wear.

Georgette Sarees

Make an elegant style statement with georgette sarees, which are perfect for occasions that require a subtle, understated look. These sarees are versatile and suitable for both light and heavy events, making them a timeless trend.

Net Sarees

Net sarees are a modern update to traditional sarees, perfect for parties and functions. They come in layers, frills, detailed embellishments, and sequins, which make them lightweight and suitable for celebrations of all kinds. The sheer factor of net sarees gives them a feminine appeal that is both stylish and elegant.

Banarasi Sarees

Reflect royalty and traditional glamour with banarasi silk, banarasi georgette, and banarasi handloom silk sarees. These sarees are available in shades like red, golden, green, and mustard yellow, and are perfect for traditional occasions. You can also find exquisite banarasi sarees in light fabrics like organza, which are perfect for more understated events.

Bridal Sarees

Bridal sarees are an essential part of any wedding, and you can choose from a range of materials like kanjivaram pure silk, banarasi silk, net, handloom, and banarasi georgette. Brides can add their personal touch to their saree and tweak their draping style to modernize their traditional bridal saree in silk, organza, georgette, or net. Choose a bridal saree that perfectly complements your style and personality, and make your wedding day unforgettable.

How to Drape Sarees?

The saree is a traditional garment worn by women in India and other parts of South Asia. It is usually draped lengthwise around the body, creating layers and pleats. The ensemble includes an undergarment known as the “petticoat”, which is fastened around the waist and a blouse, which is trimmed above the waist, leaving the midriff visible. There are more than 80 different ways to drape a saree, depending on the cultural heritage of the region.

Necessary items needed for saree draping:

  • A Saree
  • A Petticoat
  • A Blouse
  • A Safety Pin
  • Accessories
  • A Mirror

Step 1 - Arrange all necessary Items for Saree Draping

Arrange in advance all the necessary items you need to wear or use with a saree. Make sure your petticoat or under skirt matches the tone of the saree.

Step 2 - Start Tucking in Saree

Start by tucking the saree into the petticoat before continuing to wrap. Wrap the saree around your waist and continue the first wrap till your navel. This ensures that the saree and petticoat are even.

Step 3 - Pleat Neatly

Pick up the other end of the saree, pleat it neatly and place it over your left shoulder. This is known as the pallu or the palla of the saree. You can adjust the number of pleats as per your preference.

Step 4 - Adjust The Pallu

Adjust the pallu to your required length and number of pleats without disturbing the parts of saree that are already tucked in, wrapped or adjusted. Hold on to the loose end of the saree.

Step 5 - Tuck it Diagonally

Tuck the loose end diagonally near the place where you finished the first round of the saree near the navel.

Step 6 - Remaining Part Pleat it Properly

Pleat the remaining part of the saree properly and neatly just like you did with your pallu pleats and tuck it in at the center near the navel.

Step 7 - Pin up the Pleats

After pleating, pin up all the pleats together and attach them to the underneath skirt or petticoat using a safety pin to avoid the pleats from opening up or coming out.

Step 8 - Spread the Pallu Over Arm

You can either spread the pallu out over your arm or leave it gathered, depending on your preference. Adjust the uncomfortable or awkward gatherings as per your comfort.

Step 9 - Fix the Shoulder Pallu to the Blouse

Fix the shoulder pallu to the blouse using a safety pin so that it doesn’t fall off.

Step 10 - Finally Pin Your Saree

Pin your saree at more places if you wish to make it more secure. And there you have it! With these simple steps, you can drape a saree easily and look gorgeous for any occasion.

Latest Style of Saree Draping

Sarees, the native dress of India, have been a traditional style for ages, but they have evolved into many different fashions. In the Indian fashion scene, just like Indian weddings, even the timeless pieces are receiving modern touches through various styles of draping. Let’s have a look at the latest style of saree draping.

Butterfly Saree Draping Style

Pleated long capes, jacket capes, bow details, ruffled sleeves, or huge balloon sleeves give a butterfly-effect to your saree look. It is a slight twist to a regular Nivi style of wearing a saree. The only difference is that the pallu is very thin so that the midriff or navel is visible.

Fish Cut Style Saree

Chiffon sarees or other soft fabric sarees are perfect for draping in a fish-cut style that would make you appear like a mermaid. It is different or distinctive majorly because of its petticoat. The petticoat is in A-line shape that highlights a woman’s shape and steals the show.

Mermaid Saree Draping Style

Just like the fish-cut saree, the mermaid saree also looks pretty and highlights the curves. Satin, silk, or cotton petticoats can be preferred while draping a saree in mermaid style. A body-hugging drape or even Mumtaz style saree draping would create an impact of a mermaid for your parties and functions.

Indo-western Style Saree

Indo-western means adding a touch of western influence to your traditional six-yard wonder. For that matter, you can combine the saree look with a short T-shirt, peplum top, crop top, off-shoulder blouse, or halter neck blouse to look innovative and modern. You can go for other hip choices in blouses to create an Indo-western look for your cocktails and night parties.

Dhoti Style Saree Draping

One of the coolest ways to enhance the look of your desi saree is to drape it in dhoti style. You can mix your saree style with a dhoti look and amp it up with the blouse of your choice. One can also wear a dhoti beneath a saree to give an illusion of a trendy-dhoti look.

Belt Style Saree

To embrace the enhanced and modernized version of a saree, tie your saree up with a belt at the waist area. Belts are the most effortless ways to glam up an otherwise basic saree that you would be wearing at a sangeet or haldi event. Your draping style will go up a notch with an added accessory. Leather, stone, pearl, and fabric belts look best with Indian sarees.

Pant Style Saree

Quite easy and funky, you just have to replace your petticoat with a trouser or a pair of pants. Flared, diet, parallel, or cigarette pants in full or ankle length; the choice is yours to make it look stunning, edgy, smart, or super comfy. The pant style saree looks modish and one can take cues from Bollywood actresses like Sonakshi Sinha and Sonam Kapoor for this fashion quotient.
